He moved to Weald on or before his marriage.
By 1708 he appears to have become an important part of Bampton society. The Quarter Sessions index records (RJ 1708 Ep2) that the inhabitants of Bampton complained about the disorderly alehose kept by Rowland MATHEWS. This was signed by Thos HORDE, Thos SNELL vicar, Jno DEWE, Hen CHURCH, Jno SANDELANDS & Ed KENDALL churchwardens, Bat COLLINGWOOD & Chas KNIPE overseers of the poor.
The Quarter Sessions index also records (C 1714 M5 and C 1715 E1) that he and Wm WHEELER were the witnesses when Thos SNELL vicar and Fr CARTER churchwdn certified that Jno DEWE Esq had taken communion.
His will was drawn up on 8 Sep 1726 and proved on 20 Dec 1726. This describes him as a yeoman of Weald. It mentions his wife and five surviving children. He had bought the Crown Inn (occupied by Edward WILLIAMS) from Lord Coventry, He had also bought land from Mr SOUTHBY and from Mr LISSETT. He appointed John PAWLING Sen and John PAWLING Jun – presumable relations of his wife – as overseers of his will.
