He lived in the parish of Bampton all his life. In later life he farmed in Weald. He was Overseer of the Poor for Weald in 1776. The Land Tax Assessment of 1792 showed him as the occupier of “Mr Tomkin’s farm” assessed at £7/14/4 which was more substantial than most of the properties listed. He was still there for the Land Tax Redemption of 1798.

His will was drawn up on 8 Feb 1803 and proved in Oxford on 20 May 1803. It mentions his wife Elizabeth, children Elizabeth James Joseph Hannah, trustees William Williams and Joseph Collins (both farmers of Weald). The Death Duty Register (of 20 May 1803) shows that his estate was less than £300.
